Whoopie! Pies!

Whoopie Pies are absolutely a comfort food for me.  Until recently I though that everyone had grown up with these, but it turns out its really just a New England thing.  Strange.

Lil’ Sis Turns 20: A Punk Rock Birthday Cake

There are two things I need to make perfectly clear before we talk about this cake.

1) My camera is broken.  It is the saddest part of my days.  It isn’t completely broken, but it is broken enough to be really frustrating and not able to take pictures the way I want.  A quick trip to the repair shop would be enough, but…when will I find the time?

2) I swear I own a checkerboard cake pan.  Probably more than one, actually.  I have an eccentric aunt who usually sends kitchenware as gifts, but even after tearing apart the cupboards and the attic I am yet to locate any of them.

That being said…

So my baby (ha!) sister finally turned the big 2-0.  She is certainly rebellious, and her cake of choice this year was a red velvet cake with black frosting.  Because I wouldn’t be pleased unless the cake was also insanely challenging, I decided to make it a black and red checkerboard cake with creamy frosting and black fondant.  Let’s being.
